Introduction: Free verse poems are unrhymed and have no specific pattern for the lines. This is a poem about winter. This would be a great poem to share with your class as the season is changing from fall to winter.

Winter Wraps

Winter wraps
a brittle cape of cold
around a rock
and buttons it
with
a
single
leaf.

Extension: After reading this poem to your class it would be a good idea to have a discussion and create a list of things your students are noticing about the change in weather. Paper snowflakes would be a fun way to "decorate" this poem for a bulletin board or for students to keep.
